It’s been abit hectic over the last few days as pre-production for Devious Theatre’s production of Trey Parkers ‘Cannibal the Musical’ picks up momentum. Sunday afternoon saw the Devious committee getting together for a 4 hour meeting, sorting all the
details and writing very long “to do” lists.
At this stage rehearsals are in full swing 4 nights a week and I have to admit I’m finding it pretty hard. It’s not a difficulty with lines or anything, my problem is that I play the only character who doesn’t seem to have a sense of humour. It’s impossible to make it through a scene holding a straight face or more often a frown when I’m watching and listening to the rest of the cast.
Myself and Niamh Moroney are still working away on the severed hands for the press-packs aswell. They’re really coming along at this stage. Only a few more hands to make now, while the others are painted and we’ll be adding the latex, blood, nails and details over the next few days.
Tomorrow see’s us taking a break
from hand production to travel to Waterford in search of wigs, beards and other facial features to transform many of the cast into dirty miner/cowboy types.
This evening we were fitted with our various costumes to do the first of many Cannibal promo shoots. The six hopeless miners pictured above; Niamh Moroney, Ken McGuire, Stephen Colfer, Dave
Thompson, myself and John Morton headed to the Castle Park with Paddy Dunne and Kevin Mooney to do the shoot. It was far from a “shpadoinkle day” with the rain pouring down but that didn’t stop us.
You wouldn’t believe the looks we got from tourists, passers-by and park security when the six us walked up the parade looking like extras from Deadwood. As we posed for various different shots in the park a large
group of men were jogging around, we think they might have been a soccer team training. As they passed, we smiled, tweaked our cowboy hats and said “howdy.” We were met with nothing but frowns and curious looks. I’m sorry but even though we were dressed as cowboys, I still think it’s weirder for 20 guys to put on really small shorts and go run around together in the rain!?
All of the promo shots will now be worked on by Mr Paddy Dunne before becoming part of the ’severed hand’ press
packs. There’s still plenty more shoots to come aswell with the whores and the trappers plus the Cannibal poster.
For anybody who hasn’t heard it yet, there is also the Devious Theatre fundraiser gig this Saturday Night in Cleeres Theatre. Another chance to catch the Chief and Jack O’Leary in action, plus 40 Love and SuperNova Scotia. Doors open at 9.30pm and its only €5 for the four acts. It’s for a good albeit Devious cause so don’t miss it!
